If you follow the walking tour of Monroe, stop number 15 is Belk Building (1888-1901) - 201 North Main Street.
This landmark was built where William Henry Belk opened his first retail store on May 29,1888. The store was known as the “New York Racquet.” His brother, Dr. John M. Belk, soon joined in running the business, and it became Belk Brothers in 1891. The store was different in that prices were clearly marked (no haggling) and it was cash only. Any customer not satisfied could return his purchase for a refund. The present building was constructed in 1901 and continued the tradition of the
Belk brothers for many years. When William Henry Belk died in 1952 at age 89, there were almost 300 stores in 14 states. Belk’s Department Stores 100-year anniversary was celebrated in 1988 in Monroe.
